The Global Biodiversity Census Partnership
Our mission is to obtain a baseline estimate of the world's total biodiversity by intensive, scientific sampling of life at selected reserves, parks, and other priority areas while infusing communities with a strong awareness of biodiversity and an appreciation of the fragile complexity of our natural resources.
Discover Life in America (DLIA) will achieve this mission by spearheading a partnership of organizations that will census the biodiversity of their region. We will build on 15 successful years implementing the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, a biodiversity census in collaboration with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which has helped us develop and refine the necessary management and scientific tools, skills, and expertise to inform this project.
Through the Global Biodiversity Census (GBC), DLIA will provide structure to coordinate, share, and disseminate findings from local biodiversity inventories to an international audience and those entities providing support and funding for this alliance. We intend the GBC to be truly an alliance, with full participation of its members in the decision-making of the group. Our partners are local by nature and would remain funded and administered at the local or regional level. However, the GBC would provide the connectivity between those individual efforts and would expand the capacity to reach a wider range of funding options and expertise. Other benefits of the Global Biodiversity Census include:
